Tolkien's Desk by 89ravenclaw Tolkien's Desk by 89ravenclaw
PRINT NOW AVAILABLE AT MY INPRINT STORE: www.inprnt.com/gallery/89raven…

Earlier this month, I was commissioned to complete this piece as course art for Dr. Verlyn Flieger's upcoming Tolkien class through the Mythgard Institute.

The idea behind the piece for to show Tolkien in the progress of writing his famous works, while highlighting the course material (The Silmarillion, The Hobbit, and The Lord of the Rings).

I finished this painting awhile ago, but since the course information is now online, I feel safe posting it.

Progression on Tumblr: 89ravenclaw.tumblr.com/post/34…

UPDATE: Whaaaat?! A DD? That's never happened before (took me awhile to figure out why I suddenly had 600+ feedback messages waiting for me). Thanks everone who liked this.

It's brilliant! Do the Elvish letters say something?

Yup, all the text are from scans of actual pages he wrote, so one is the inscription under his Mines of Moria gate drawing and the other is a page from Two Towers I think (I can't actually remember, this was a while ago).

The only text that isn't from a scan is the Silmarillion quote I have him writing.

All the drawings are his too except for the main image of the Silmirls, but all I did there was trace over the really blurry small picture we have of his own drawing of that, because there was no way that thing was going to look drawn at this scale.

As for the text on the ring, that's accurate too, though I had to hand draw that rather than use a font
